Overview
Inflation is a change in the general price level over time. When prices rise, the same amount of money buys fewer goods and services. A historical inflation calculator uses consumer price index (CPI) data or annual inflation rates to estimate that change between two dates.
There are three related calculations that are often confused:
- Historical value: how much money in one year would be needed to match the buying power of an amount in another year.
- Purchasing power: how much a fixed amount can buy after prices have increased.

How to estimate
The most precise method uses CPI index values for the starting and ending periods. The core formula is:
Inflation-adjusted amount = original amount × (ending CPI ÷ starting CPI)
For example, if the ending CPI is 1.30 times the starting CPI, an amount of $100 would require $130 to purchase an equivalent broad basket. The implied cumulative inflation is:
Cumulative inflation = (ending CPI ÷ starting CPI − 1) × 100
To estimate the present purchasing power of a past amount, reverse the ratio:
Current purchasing power = original amount × (starting CPI ÷ ending CPI)
Annual inflation rates can also be compounded. If the assumed rate is the same each year, use:
Future cost = current cost × (1 + annual inflation rate)number of years
For instance, a hypothetical $2,000 expense growing at an assumed 3% annually for five years would be calculated as $2,000 × 1.035, or approximately $2,319. The result is not a guarantee that the expense will rise by exactly 3%; it is a planning scenario.
When rates vary by year, calculate each year separately rather than using a simple average. The sequence would be:

Compounding matters because each annual increase applies to the price after previous increases. Adding annual percentages without compounding will usually understate the total change.
Inputs and assumptions
A useful inflation calculator should make its inputs visible. Before calculating, specify the following:
- Currency and country: Inflation measures differ across countries. Do not combine a US CPI series with prices from another economy without a clear reason.
- Starting date: Decide whether the comparison begins with a calendar year, month, quarter, or a specific purchase date.
- Ending date: A full-year comparison and a month-to-month comparison answer different questions. Use matching periods where possible.
- Price measure: Headline CPI is a broad measure. Core inflation excludes selected volatile categories and may be useful for trend analysis, but it is not necessarily a better measure of an individual household's expenses.
- Amount: Enter the nominal amount in the currency and time period selected. A salary, annual budget, monthly bill, and one-time purchase should not be treated as interchangeable.
- Forecast rate: If estimating future costs, label the rate as an assumption. Consider a low, middle, and high scenario instead of relying on one number.
CPI is an average, not a universal cost-of-living index. A household that spends heavily on housing, fuel, medical care, tuition, or groceries may experience a different cost-of-living increase than the headline measure. Location also matters: national inflation data may not reflect regional rents, taxes, insurance, or utility costs.
Do not confuse disinflation with falling prices. Disinflation means prices are still rising but at a slower rate. Deflation means the general price level is falling, although individual prices can move in either direction during both periods.
For investment analysis, inflation adjustment should be paired with returns. A nominal return is the stated return; a real return accounts for lost purchasing power. A simple approximation is:
Real return ≈ nominal return − inflation rate

Worked examples
Comparing a past amount with a later year
Assume a calculator shows a starting CPI of 100 and an ending CPI of 125. A $400 purchase in the starting period would have an equivalent later cost of:
$400 × (125 ÷ 100) = $500
The cumulative increase is 25%. In the opposite direction, $400 in the later period would have the purchasing power of:
$400 × (100 ÷ 125) = $320
The two answers describe different questions, so always state which year contains the original amount.
Estimating a future savings goal
Suppose a household expects a $10,000 goal to be needed in eight years and uses a 2.5% annual inflation assumption. The estimate is:
$10,000 × 1.0258 ≈ $12,184
The household might therefore set a target above $10,000, then revisit the assumption as actual inflation and the cost of the specific goal become clearer. If the goal is a medical procedure, rent, tuition, or a home purchase, a category-specific estimate may be more informative than broad CPI.
Testing wage growth against inflation
Assume a salary rises from $60,000 to $63,000, a nominal increase of 5%. If the relevant inflation measure over the same period is 3%, the approximate real increase is 2 percentage points. The precise calculation is:
($63,000 ÷ $60,000) ÷ 1.03 − 1 ≈ 1.94%

When to recalculate
Recalculate a historical or future estimate whenever the underlying inputs change. For a historical comparison, update the result when a new CPI period is available or when you change from annual data to monthly data. A monthly estimate can be more relevant for a recent purchase, but it may also be noisier than a full-year comparison.
For budgets and savings goals, review the calculation at least when the price of the target expense changes materially, your income changes, or your planning horizon shifts.
