Overview

Inflation is a change in the general price level of goods and services. When prices rise, each unit of currency buys less than it did before. An inflation calculator translates that broad concept into a specific comparison: what an amount of money from one year would be equivalent to in another year, given an inflation rate or index.

How to estimate

The basic rate-based formula is:

Future amount = Present amount × (1 + annual inflation rate)number of years

For example, suppose a household spends $3,000 per month and wants to estimate the equivalent monthly budget after five years using an assumed annual inflation rate of 3%. The calculation is:

$3,000 × (1.03)5 = approximately $3,478

Under that assumption, the household would need roughly $3,478 per month after five years to buy what $3,000 buys at the starting point. This is a planning estimate, not a promise about future prices.

The reverse calculation measures the purchasing power of a fixed amount:

Future purchasing power = Present amount ÷ (1 + annual inflation rate)number of years

Using the same assumption, $3,000 held as cash for five years would have purchasing power equivalent to approximately $2,592 in today’s dollars, before considering any interest or investment return. The two calculations are different ways of describing the same erosion of purchasing power.

For historical data, replace the assumed rate with price indexes:

Equivalent ending amount = Starting amount × (Ending price index ÷ Starting price index)

This method is appropriate when comparing a historical salary, rent payment, or purchase with a later period. Be precise about the dates: monthly, annual-average, and year-end indexes are not interchangeable.

To compare wages with inflation, calculate both growth rates. If a salary rises from $60,000 to $63,000, nominal wage growth is 5%. If prices rise by 3% over the same period, the approximate real wage gain is 2%. For greater precision, use:

Real wage growth = [(1 + wage growth) ÷ (1 + inflation rate)] − 1

A useful inflation calculator depends less on complicated mathematics than on choosing appropriate inputs. Start with the amount being measured, the starting date, and the ending date. Then identify whether the calculation is historical or forward-looking.

Historical comparisons

Use an established price index when you want to compare purchasing power across completed periods. The result represents an average change in consumer prices, not the exact change in every product. Assume a salary is $70,000 and the planning horizon is eight years. At an assumed annual inflation rate of 2.5%, the income required to maintain similar average purchasing power would be:

$70,000 × (1.025)8 = approximately $85,300

If the salary instead grows to $82,000, it has increased in nominal terms but has not fully matched the selected inflation assumption. This does not prove that the worker is worse off in every respect; taxes, benefits, housing costs, savings rates, and job changes also affect financial well-being.
